The ELD mandate went into effect in December of 2017, and carriers had two years to switch their old Automatic On-Board Recording Devices to the new Electronic Logging Devices. With the technology of today, and laws involving hours of service and miles driven, the ELDs are better trackers than AOBRDs. There is an exemption; trucks with an engine older than 2000 will not be required to install an ELD as its technology won’t be able to handle ELDs.
