A Story about Driver Training in 1968

John Bendel, a contributing editor for Land Line and former trucker, shares his story about becoming a truck driver in 1968. Back then, there was no CDL training, Bendel just passed his driving test in New Jersey with a 1.4-ton Ford Falcon and was then able to drive a tractor-trailer. The terminal manager of Friedman’s Express in Pennsylvania handed Bendel the keys, some freight bills, a manifest, and told him the trailer was already hooked up. During this time, learn as you go was how things went, which is quite different when compared to the rules and regulations in the trucking industry of today.
