Starting in 1917 at 3% to its current 12%, the federal excise tax is making it difficult for trucking companies to invest in newer and safer trucks. New trucks are equipped with safety features that help save lives, have updated technology, and are more fuel efficient. When the tax on a new truck is near $20,000 it makes more sense for trucking companies to keep their old, outdated trucks on the road.
In Sioux Falls, S.D., next week, Dusty Johnson, South Dakota State Representative, will be around to discuss concerns with the local trucking companies about the excise tax.
