The California Trucking Association has filed a lawsuit asking to block the new gig-work law from applying to truckers. They have stated that this new law will force more than 70,000 independent truckers to be out of work. The CTA is fighting this new law, which starts January 1, because they feel that owner-operators have a right to continue with the businesses they have built. The new law states the people must be employees of a business and not independently contracted out. This new law will also affect businesses like Uber and Lyft.
