This year, the Commerical Vehicle Safety Alliance’s Operation Safe Driver Week took place July 12-18. Over the course of that week, law enforcement watched almost 70,000 incidents of unsafe driver behavior and issued over 70,000 tickets.
Nearly 4,000 law enforcement officers in the United States and Canada interacted with nearly 30,000 commercial drivers and almost 40,000 drivers of passenger vehicles. 10,736 warnings and citations were given to commercial motor vehicle drivers. This year’s focus was on speeding and commercial drivers were issued 2,339 speeding citations and over 3,423 warnings.
These are the top five traffic citations given to truckers during this time period:
- Speeding/violation of basic speed law/driving too fast for the conditions – 2,339
- Failure to use a seat belt while operating a commercial motor vehicle – 1,003
- Failure to obey traffic control device – 617
- Using a hand-held phone/texting – 269
- Improper lane change – 122
