For over 65 years, rear impact guards have been required on trucks but were not included on the list of items that have to be inspected during the annual commercial vehicle inspection. Following a petition from the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and recommendations from the U.S. Government Accountability Office, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is moving forward with a new revision to the inspection.
