There is currently a trucker shortage out there and the new DRIVE Safe Act going across the desks of legislators might be the key to filling some of those empty seats. Currently, truckers under the age of 21 in the majority of the states can obtain a CDL but are prohibited from driving across state lines. The DRIVE Safe Act would allow the younger drivers to drive intrastate after an in-depth apprenticeship program. After obtaining a CDL by way of the current requirements, these younger drivers will have to complete at least 400 hours of on-duty time and 240 hours of driving time with an experienced trucker along for the ride. To go along with this training, all trucks being used must be up to date with advanced safety technology. Many in the trucking industry have endorsed this Act and are hoping for it to be pushed through sooner than later. Click the link below to learn more about this.
