John Ray, the driver of the gold, brown, and chrome Peterbilt that sped around Talledega Superspeedway during the national anthem has passed away. In 2001, after the 9/11 attacks, the track chairman at the time wanted Ray’s patriotic big rig to help boost the country’s morale. Ray stuck a flag onto the back and away he went for a fast-paced lap around the track. His iconic pre-race lap will forever be a part of Talledega Superspeedway’s history.
